When going to the state of New York, it will most likely be NYC that you will visit. It is the city that never sleeps and it has a lot to offer to everyone. NYC consists of 5 boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and the Bronx. Manhattan is without a doubt the most expensive place for you to live but of course, it is also where you will find the most to do. To save a bit of money it is definitely recommended to stay in the vibrant Brooklyn instead. Brooklyn has become very hip in the last years and has a lot of great places to stay.
The things that are must do’s when visiting NYC: Central Park, Ground Zero, Empire State Building, Rockefeller Centre, Brooklyn Bridge, Times Square, Bryant Park, Pier 15, The MET, Guggenheim, The Highline, Grand Central Station, Roosevelt Island, Statue of Liberty and The meatpacking district. If you are visiting NYC in the winter, it is definitely a magical experience to ice-skate at either the Rockefeller Centre with the big Christmas tree in the background or in Central Park.
If you wish to get a little away from the big city life you could go to Coney Island. Not too far from the mid-city but well away. Here you can enjoy a day at the beach, walk along the pier and have fun at the amusement park. If you want to get further away from the city, The Hamptons is definitely a good place to go. Here you can get away from it all and relax in nice surroundings.
When visiting NYC you kind of have to experience Broadway. You can score a good deal on the otherwise quite expensive musical tickets, by buying them at Times Square. It will definitely be an experience to remember. There are also great opportunities to watch sports games here. You could for example, go to a basketball game at Madison Square Garden, a baseball game at Yankee Stadium or a football game at New Meadowlands Stadium.
If you want to experience more of the cultural side, you could go to Ellis Island. This was the gateway for over 12 million immigrants, when coming into the states. You will have an interesting visit to the National Immigration Museum and learn about the history of that time. You could also go to a church in Harlem, to experience a gospel choir. It is easy to get up to Harlem and anywhere else for that matter, no matter where you live in NYC, since their Subway system is easy and works great.
